A Christmas Present from a Geography Professor

A Christmas Present from a Geography Professor

I’m well underway enjoying my Christmas break, taking an extra two days off before the University of North Florida is officially closed for the holidays. I don’t think I’ve anticipated a break more in my life. 2024 has been a decade.

Now is the time to catch up on some of my planned viewing of films and videos, that are either in my Max, Prime Video, or other streaming service queues. However, sometimes you get something that comes across your video viewing threshold that is so intriguing that it requires more immediate watching.

That describes a mesmerizing video from retired University of Mary Washington Professor, Donald Rallis.

While I worked at UMW, I would occasionally get questions from Dr. Rallis about video/media that were a harbinger of good thing to come, as I knew that he had a gift of telling stories of his travels around the globe. That continues to this day through his YouTube channel “Journeys. Places. People.”

At one time he had a website entitled Regional Geography (around 2007), later changed to Regional GeogBlog, and it was filled with photos and stories of his travels. Here’s a banner from the Internet Archive that gives you an idea about where those stories came from…

… And here is the About page circa 2007-2009 that encapsulates the evolving “purpose” of the blog.

Now, all web roads leads to his YouTube channel with more than 10K subscribers that has delighted me to this very day. I hope you watch and enjoy this video (and don’t forget his other videos) as much as I did – and think with me about playing with the ships and “mules” of the Panama Canal like toys that appear under a Christmas tree for the childhood Andy Rush!.

One quick note – the video end credits reveal that this video was produced in May of 2004, but was released today, December 20, 2024. The delay doesn’t matter and it makes for a great holiday gift!
