Now Hear This – Or Not

I had glimpsed this story on a couple of sites last week but never followed the link. It seems kids are using a high frequency ringtone to signal incoming text messages in class (how pervasive this is, who knows). Well I’m proud to announce that at 41 years old (for another month and a half) I am one teacher who would be able to hear the ringtone! It seems that people over 40 shouldn’t be able to hear this. How old are you and do you pass the test?

  1. My teenage cousin played this for me over the weekend, and I was sort of happy I could hear it. That said, the noise is horrible. It makes me want to claw my ears off.

  2. Yep, I hear it. Not bad for an xx-year-old sometime rocker.

It is unpleasant if it’s at all loud. Thankfully, I can hear it at a low-ish volume.

For all you science scouts, try turning your head while you’re listening. Hear how the sound changes? That’s because very high-frequency sounds are very directional. If it were a low-frequency sound (50hz or lower), it not only wouldn’t change, but you might not be able to tell where it’s coming from.

  3. I have to agree with Martha. Not only I can hear it, but it’s so annoying that it would make we want to find the offending phone and throw it out the nearest window…. [And wouldn’t it annoy their fellow students too?]

  4. Ah – since it sounds so bad to many of you, I’m glad I can’t hear it! Go ahead and text away in my class. 🙂
