A Moment to Think What Others are Going Through

Tulane's Emergency Page

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the hurricane. For a perspective of what another university (for now, this link goes nowhere) is going through the Tulane University Emergency Information site gives an interesting synopsis of how this massive storm has turned lives a little topsy turvy. Gas prices are the least of their worries.

I just think it’s incredible that an online encyclopedia is being updated as I write this on the subject of Hurricane Katrina. WOW!

Get Dave Matthews Band “Stand Up” On Your iPod

Dave Mathews Band Site

The Official Dave Matthews Band Website has posted instructions on how to get their new studio album “Stand Up” (if you’ve purchased the copy protected CD of course) to an iPod. They also include an appeal to Apple to make it easier. I might just become a fan of these guys yet.

Google Talk

Google Talk is the new Instant Messenger service from that little upstart Google. Looking forward to trying it out versus Skype.

I’m in the iTunes Camp . . .

iTunes

. . . at least for now. I was using FireANT but there have just been too many problems. It has real potential, but crashes and other strange behavior make it too frustrating to use at this point. I really wanted it to work too. Well it’s still in beta so I’m sure I’ll revisit it, but it isn’t being updated regularly.

I watch videoblogs as well as listen to podcasts and many “vlogs” are using the h.264 QuickTime codec. That necessitated me downloading the QuickTime 7 Public Preview. We’ll see if that screws up my machine.

What is Videoblogging?

Posted by Andy Rush on 19 Aug 2005 | Tagged as: IT

This video at Make Your Own Video is another great example of the new media. This creation was an entry in a contest that required the use of archive footage to create a 3 minute video. The audio, by the author’s own admission, is not quite up to snuff. However, the overall video is very entertaining and a good summary of what this videoblogging, or vlogging thing is.

Outdoor Life Network and Hockey?

Posted by Andy Rush on 19 Aug 2005 | Tagged as: General

If you are familiar with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, then you will know how he rubs his eyes with the heals of his hands and says kind of a Scooby-Doo “Huh?” when something confuses him. That was my reaction when it was announced that the Outdoor Life Network would be broadcasting hockey for the 2005-06 season. I already watch OLN for bicycle racing, and now I can my second favorite sport on the same channel. They do realize that hockey is played indoors?

Also, read this article from the Corante podcasting blog about what the NHL and OLN should do with the broadcasts.

There were a ton of people at No Regrets (they never knew what hit them) for the TechTV Meetup in Toronto. I always meet friendly people in Canada, and this time was no exception. Leo and the others from TechTV and Command-N couldn’t have been nicer either. Leo was wearing his flame shoes that he showed off on an episode of The Screensavers. I got to shake Leo’s hand and tell him that whenever he decides to visit Fredericksburg, he has a friend here. He then proceeded to announce it to the whole crowd. “I have a friend in Fredericksburg!” Mikey Lazazz was great too, and so eager to make sure that Command-N was what people wanted in an IPTV show. I had a great time and it was the topper to a well needed vacation.
